Dr. Darrias Carter is a former McNair Scholar who obtained his Ph.D. in American Studies from the University of Iowa in the Spring of 2013.  His dissertation, titled Beyond the Veil of the Secret City, examines representations of the New Negro in Washington, D.C. between 1919 and 1935 He used photography, epistolary literature, drama, and consumer activism to highlight Black Washington's multiple articulations of New Negro identity.
